USF2000 – Winterfest next for Skip Barber Champ Anderson

January 31, 2012

Fort Collins, Colo. – With Breckenridge, Vail and Aspen practically in his backyard, there aren’t many things that are going to get MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Scott Anderson off the slopes during peak ski season in Colorado and on an airplane to Florida. But with the 2012 racing season about to get underway and a red, Mazda powered Élan Van Diemen DP08 with his name on it just sitting there, waiting to be driven, Anderson is ready to go.

Since announcing his deal to race with Belardi Auto Racing for the 2012 Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda, the Fort Collins, Colo. native has tested with the team; getting acclimated to a new team, a new car and all the setup variables now available to him.

“Testing has gone well during the off season. I’m gelling with the Belardi Auto Racing guys and Chris (Belardi Engineer Chris Lerch) and I are communicating well. I’m expecting us to be quick out of the box when we finally get racing.”

The first trial by fire for this driver/engineer combination comes in a few days at Sebring International Raceway.

Cooper Tires Winterfest
The week of February 6 is going to be a busy one for the teams of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda. Between Monday the 6th and Sunday the 12th, they will race three times at Sebring International Raceway, pack up, travel 90 minutes southeast to Palm Beach International Raceway and race three times again. The six races over seven days will give teams and drivers their first opportunity to run wheel-to-wheel against each other before the regular season begins a month from now during the 12 Hours of Sebring.

“We are treating each event differently. The regular season opens at Sebring, so we are going to use the Winterfest event as an opportunity to fine tune things and test under race conditions. We’ve tested a lot at PBIR during the off-season and we’ve been pretty good there. Since it isn’t on the regular season schedule, we’re going to treat it more like a final dress rehearsal for the season opener.”

The USF2000 cars hit the track for the first time Monday morning at 9:50 a.m. for Practice. Live timing and scoring will be available throughout the Winterfest at www.usf2000.com. Follow the action semi-live at www.twitter.com/altemusprime.
